SUBKHIDIN MOHD SALLEH THE REFEREE

IPOH, June 7 (Bernama/NNN-BERNAMA) -- Malaysian referee Subkhidin Mohamed Salleh will be on duty as the fourth official in the opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup which will see hosts South Africa taking on Mexico in Johannesburg's Soccer City stadium on June 11.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) Referees Committee chairman Raja Ahmad Zainuddin Raja Omar said in this capital of northern Perak state Sunday that the FAM Secretariat had conveyed the information to Subkhidin.

Subkhidin, 44, a teacher of a vocational secondary school in Nibong Tebal in the neighboring state of Penang, is the first Malaysian official to be selected to work as a referee in a FIFA World Cup tournament, said Raja Ahmad Zainuddin.

Two Malaysian referees had served as assistant referees at the World Cup -- the late Captain Halim Abdul Hamid in 1998 in France and Mat Lazim Awang Hamat in 2002 in South Korea/Japan -- he told reporters.

"Subkhidin's selection, even as a fourth official, is an honour for Malaysia because it is not easy to get to be on duty in the opening match," he said.

Subkhidin, who is a qualified FIFA referee, was selected for the 2006 World Cup soccer tournament in Germany but did not get to be on duty at any match.

Thirty referees from around the world have been selected to handle the 64 matches of the 2010 World Cup tournament. Besides Subkhidin, two other FAM officials have also been engaged for the upcoming World Cup tournament.

They are Dell Akhbar Khan, who will be the FIFA venue security officer based in Durban, and Paul Windsor, who will serve as a match commissioner and venue coordinator.
